UIDAI Bill likely to miss Budget Session

The bill when introduced in the winter session last year failed to get the legislative authority, rejected by Parliamentary Standing Committee

GN Bureau | March 6, 2012

The unique identification (UID) Bill, which has faced strong criticism in the past from several government quarters, is unlikely to be tabled in the budget session. This means that the UID’s 12-digit Aadhar enrollment process will continue to function under the executive orders even after three years from the time it was set up.

The bill when introduced in the winter session last year failed to get the mandate from the Parliamentary Standing committee of Finance. The committee had cited various reasons that when the legislative process was already underway to shape the bill, the executive action of going ahead with its implementation was "unethical and violative of Parliament's prerogatives.

"There are many issues that need to be worked out in the current Bill. We are discussing it with ministries and other stakeholders. It is not going to come up in the budget session," Economic Times quoted a Planning Commission official.

The parliament's budget session begins on March 12.
