UK-based Datawind Ltd has placed an order with the VMC Systems for supplying one lakh units of UbiSlate tablets, a senior official said.

"VMC Systems has already supplied around 10,000 pieces so far to Datawind, the developer of wireless web access products and services," VMC executive director B Venkata Ramana said.

Datawind last October unveiled cheapest tablet 'Aakash' to be supplied to the HRD ministry at Rs 2,276 apiece. The government, in turn, would hand over one lakh of these gadgets to students at a subsidised rate of Rs 1,100-1,200 per piece.

"We are expected to finish the order by August. By July, the current production capacity will go up by 1,000 units per day as we are adding more capacity. We are gradually upscaling the capacity so that the demand can be met," Ramana told a press conference.

He said the company's role was restricted to a supplier to Datawind as of now without any "exclusivity" and as per the agreement VMC can not sell UbiSlate directly to any other company.

"We can not sell this particular tablet to anyone. This is their (Datawind) design, their IP. We are just manufacturing it and giving it (sic)," he added.

The executive director said the total order value of the one lakh tablets will be Rs 25 crore and the company is expecting more orders from Datawind in future.

According to official website of Datawind, the UbiSlate Smartphone/tablets incorporate HD video co-processors for a high-quality multimedia experience and core graphics accelerator for a faster application support.

Ramana said VMC crossed Rs 1,000 crore turnover mark last year and is expected to show "good" growth in the current fiscal.

Replying to a query, he said the tablet which they are supplying to Datawind may also go as " Aakash-II" which is expected to be launched soon.
