Vodafone hails DIT's mobile-governance initiative

Private telecom service provider Vodafone Essar on Monday hailed the steps taken by the Department of Information Technology to leverage the power of cellphone phone through mobile-governance.

The company shared its recommendations to make the process of mobile-governance seamless and will add maximum value to a citizen's life, Vodafone said in its letter. Vodafone expressed the necessity of focusing on smooth delivery of content to majority of 2G handset users and ensuring that all government websites are mobile compliant.

It also highlighted that mobile-governance will get strengthened with the launch of 3G and 4G technologies and users will be able to access health, educational, agricultural, infotainment content on their mobile phones.

"Mobile-governance holds a great potential to maximise the usage of mobile telephony in keeping the citizens aware and informed. We will fully support the government in this initiative and encourage it in its efforts to expand the base of active data users," Vodafone Essar Director Strategy Samaresh Parida said.

Vodafone has suggested some of the uses which include use of mobiles for tracking vehicles like police patrol vehicles, issue of tickets to offenders using GPRS enabled handsets which would enable easy tagging and reference for future also.

The government's Department of Information Technology (DIT) has taken up the initiative of formulating a comprehensive policy on mobile-governance in order to make government services available to the residents of the country through mobile devices.
