Case lodged against RJD workers for 'beer protest'

PTI | April 29, 2010

A complaint has been lodged against some RJD members, led by MLA Srikant Nirala, who danced on a highway with beer bottles in hand in full public view while enforcing the 12-hour nationwide strike on April 27.

A senior police officer told PTI today that a case had been filed at Maner police station charging the RJD members with "bringing five cartons of beer to spray at each other in full public view on NH 30 with Nirala allegedly leading them".

The case was lodged following a directive from the state police headquarters yesterday, the official confirmed.

TV footage showed Nirala leading several RJD workers, who were crooning a popular Hindi film number, to sprinkle beer from bottles, but the legislator denied that they were his supporters.

"It is an attempt to tarnish my image," Nirala countered without explaining.

Five persons were arrested in connection with the incident, the officer said.

Decrying the incident, state RJD chief Abdul Bari Siddiqui said, "An inquiry has been ordered within the party.
