CBI probe sought on orphanage for keeping Nepalese girls

Demonstrators seek an inquiry into functioning of Michael Job Orphanage

About 500 activists of different Hindu outfits on Monday staged a demonstration in front of an orphanage in Sulur on the outskirts, from where 23 Nepalese girls were rescued recently, demanding a CBI inquiry in the functioning the institution, funds received by it and also arresting its promoters for the alleged illegal activities.

The agitators, led by Hindu Munnani and VHP leaders, raising slogans against Michael Job Orphanage, wanted both the centre and state governments to order an inquiry into its functioning and alleged that it was involving in religious conversion.

Accusing the orphanage of indulging in international trafficking of girls, the outfits said that a detailed inquiry would throw lights on the orphanage, since keeping girls of foreign origin was a offence under various acts.

Meanwhile, the girls, aged between and 18 years, rescued by the District Child Welfare Committee and kept at government-run shelter, were shifted to another home run by NGO, Kovai Marialaya in Ganapati in the city, as they complained of poor facilities, including food, at the social welfare department's home.

According to committee sources, the girls were likely to be handed over to Nepal government, through Nepal Embassy in Delhi, instead of earlier plan to take them to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, so that the parents of the girls come and take them personally. However, the decision would be left to the social welfare ministry, they said.

In the meantime, the district administration has sought details from the orphanage over the presence of the girls and asked to submit relevant documents within 15 days, as the orphanage had claimed that the children were brought by another orphanage in Nepal.
