Cong walkout of WB assembly over assault of party-workers

Demands arrest of those behind the recent attacks on party members at Khejuri

PTI | July 26, 2010

Congress members today staged a walk out from the West Bengal assembly demanding arrest of those behind the recent attack on its party members at Khejuri in East Midnapore district.

Earlier, Congress member Asit Mal told the House that some miscreants were trying to vitiate the atmosphere and the police were aiding them.

He demanded that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee give a statement on the incident in the House and take steps for immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack.

Two Congress workers were beaten up at Khejuri when they were returning from a rally on Saturday. Soon after the incident, WBPCC chief Manas Bhunia had sat on a dharna before the SDO's office in the district demanding arrest of the guilty.

Without directly blaming Trinamool Congress, its ally in the state, Bhunia had given enough hints at a press conference yesterday about the identity of the attackers.

"There is no CPI(M) in Khejuri now. There is no red flag. Then who are these people who attacked Congress workers and damaged arches with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi's posters?"

He had said that "unwanted CPI(M) elements" had entered the Trinamool Congress who should be identified and purged.
