Denotified nomads plan rally for Renke Panel implementation

PTI | September 17, 2010

A rally of the denotified nomadic tribes demanding early implementation of the Renke Commission report giving facilities and concessions to the community nationwide will be held here today.

There are 15 crore denotified nomads in the country while Maharashtra itself has over one crore.

Denotified nomadic tribes include those Pardhis (bird catchers), knife sharpeners, artisans making objects of bamboo, Dombaris (tumblers, rope-dancers) Vaidus (indigenous medicine practitioners) and Kudmude Joshi (roadside fortunetellers).

"The demand of facilities and concessions to the de-notified nomadic tribes is on the rise. Even political parties are supporting it and the recommendations should be implemented," Balkrishna Renke, who headed the Commission told PTI.

The Commission was appointed in 2006 and the report was prepared in two years. It was submitted to the UPA Government in 2008. However, the Government has not implemented the recommendations so far, Renke said.

About 98 per cent people from nomadic tribes are landless and without shelters, 94 per cent have no BPL cards, 72 per cent have no ration cards and 98 per cent do not get bank loan facilities, he said. .

There is an urgent need to implement the recommendations considering the situation of these people," Renke added.

Renke also supported caste-based census and said it would highlight actual numbers of the denotified nomadic tribes and their lot would better.
