Union members, mess-workers, daily-wage workers protest for salary increase and permanent status

Non-teaching staff at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here staged a demonstration today amid high police security at the campus premises to press for various demands, including permanent status to daily wage workers.

The protesters, including union members, daily wage workers and workers of the hostel mess, accused the administration of going back on its promise to issue new promotion guidelines for the workers from July 1.

The protesters alleged that despite bringing their various demands to the notice of authorities, no action was taken by them.

They said they had notified director Sanjay Dhande ten days back about the demonstrations that they will stage from August 16-20 and threatened to go on hunger strike from August 23 if their demands were not met.

IIT administration has termed the protest as illegal while maintaining that work at both the college and hostel went on as usual.

New guidelines will be issued within a month after the proposal is passed by the committee, Registrar Sanjeev Kalashkar said.

He also said that the administration was ready for talks to look into various other demands of the staff.

Meanwhile, there were reports of minor clashes between security personnel and the protesters.
