Lawyers agitate against police assault on judicial magistrate in Rourkela

Work in government offices affected even as lawyers to continue blockades and cease-work for seven days

Members of Rourkela Bar Association (RBA), continued their agitation for the second day today obstructing the main road near the civil court and resorted to ceasework condemning assault of a senior Judicial Magistrate by police on Saturday night.

The road blockade will continue for seven days and lawyers would observe cease-work in different courts, the RBA president said.

Similarly, functioning of the many government offices like Municipality, Road Transport Office, Tahsil, income-tax, sales tax, Sub-collector and treasury was affected as attendance was thin with lawyers obstructing the offices by staging demonstration.

Bar Association has been demanding transfer of Superintendent of police Diptesh Patnaik and arrest of the inspector-in-charge Udit Nagar police station, Sadanand Pujari who allegedly assaulted the Magistrate inside the police station and to bring the SP in the preview of inquiry in the Judicial Commission announced by Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Bhubaneswar yesterday.

Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in front of the SP's office and his residence to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order.
