Functioning of medical colleges and hospitals across Bihar were badly hit today with junior doctors proceeding on an indefinite strike since midnight even as police took into custody both the bodyguards of RJD MLA Surendra Prasad Yadav.

The two bodyguards allegedly fired at junior doctors at Anugraha Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Gaya in which two interns were injured after a heated argument between the medicos and the legislator over delay in treatment of a patient last night.

Surendra Prasad Yadav, a four-time MLA from Belaganj assembly constituency in Gaya and minister for excise in the erstwhile Rabri Devi cabinet, had gone to AN Medical College and Hospital here with a patient late last evening.

The MLA had an argument with the doctors over alleged delay in attending to the patient whom they referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment after which bodyguards Abhinandan Yadav and Ashok Yadav had fired.

Dr S P Das from Assam and Dr Shahbuddin sustained bullet injuries in their legs.

"We have placed both the police bodyguards under suspension and taken them into custody in connection with the case", director general of police Neelmani said in Patna.

Meanwhile, hundreds of junior doctors went on an indefinite strike severely paralysing work at the state-run medical colleges and hospitals in Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur since midnight to protest against the incident.

"The functioning of the medical colleges and hospitals is badly hit", official sources said.

The junior doctors have demanded adequate security for them during duty hours and immediate arrest of Yadav.
