Rajasthan manufacturers oppose plastic ban

Manufacturers' assoc says the move will lead to closure of almost 400 units and render thousands unemployed

PTI | May 12, 2010

Opposing the proposed ban on use of plastic in Rajasthan, an association of plastic manufacturers today said over 400 industrial units would face closure and thousands of employees rendered jobless if the order is implemented from August one this year.

President of the association Rajendra Gajraj said at a press conference that plastic manufacturing units have been producing material including polythene bags under strict central government and environmental guidelines and there has been no violation of rules.

He alleged that the state government is indulging in false propaganda to harass and exploit plastic manufacturers, adding that over 500 plastic recycling units would also face closure if the ban is imposed.

Gajraj demanded that the state government should hold talks with the association before making an official announcement and implementing the ban.

"We are not against pollution free environment, but there should be other agencies responsible to keep the city clean," he said.

The Gehlot government has recently decided to ban use of plastic including carry bags made of polythene.
