A 50,000 strong melee of workersof the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) will be going on an indefinite boycott of work Wednesday morning in protest ofthe handing over of power distribution in Agra city to a private company.

A delegation of the UP Vidyut Karamchari Samyukt Sangharsh Samiti today met the CMD of the power corporation, Navneet Sehgal to press the government for reverting its decision on this count and on failure of talks a call for indefinite work boycott was given, the media convener of the Samiti Sahilendra Dubey said.

Barring the employees and engineers on shift duty, the remaining staff would be on work boycott, Dubey said adding that the decision to exempt them has been taken to ward off grid failure.

"The CMD categorically told the representatives that the government would go ahead with its plans and hand over the entire power arrangement of Agra to Torrent power for a period of 20 years from April 1 and we have been left with no other option but to go on work boycott," he said.

Dubey, however, warned the authorities against any harassment or intimidation of employees and said it would force them to go on total strike.
