All-women companies would be deployed in areas where there are frequent protests led by the fairer sex, like Manipur

The Centre has sanctioned a request of the Assam Rifles for a five per cent reservation for women in the force, following which the paramilitary force is in process of raising all-women companies.

"The process for raising all-women companies have started. It will take about three years. Some 3,300 women are expected to be recruited," Assam Rifles Director General Lt Gen Rameshwar Roy said today.

Roy said the all-women companies would be deployed in areas where there are frequent protests led by the fairer sex, like Manipur.

Some companies will also assist the men during search operations, while others would be mainly deployed as anti-riot teams.

Besides, Roy said the force has also asked for a sanction to raise two 'ecological battalions' to be deployed in the region.

Contending that activities like jhum cultivation and others were destroying the ecological balance, the AR DG said the battalions, with the help of locals and respective state governments, help restore the ecological balance.

"They will be core elements of the Assam Rifles. They will be engaged in activities like tree plantations, awareness programmes and others," he added.
