Andhra Pradesh rewards underperforming legislators with gadgets

Despite little work getting done this session, AP MLAs and MLCs will get a Sony tab (the latest) each

GN Bureau | June 21, 2013

Even after a dismal record of performance this session, 294 MLAs and 90 MLCs in Andhra Pradesh Assembly and council will get gift vouchers from the assembly today late evening after the conclusion of the monsoon session. The session did not witness any important business being undertaken and stood adjourned most of the time.

The gift voucher can be used only after Friday and it comes as a surprise for the MLAs and MLCs. It is learnt that the surprise gift is  a Sony Xperia Z tablet which can be collected in exchange of the voucher.

This is not for the first time that the members are getting electronic gifts from the government. In the last last two years, they have received Sony laptops, Samsung Galaxy tabs and scanner-cum-printers.

The government will buy around 384 tablets, each costing Rs 41,000. The Sony dealer in the city has been given the orders and it will be ready for distribution later this week.

Assembly sources said that this time there was a plan to give high-end laptops but most of the members wanted something different as they already were given laptops in 2011. On the demand of the members the tablet SPG321was shortlisted as it is the latest in the market. It has 32 GB storage and is dust-proof and waterproof and is both wi-fi and 3G enabled.

This session of the assembly and council witnessed disruption and adjournment and hardly any positive discussion happened. No important issues from power crisis to shortage of seeds were discussed. Finance Bill is also all set to get approval without debate today evening.
