Home minister P Chidambaram at a press conference here said, "The people of India should know that the government is not against peaceful protest in India. The organisers were given certain conditions under which they can hold their protests. They were told that the fast should be for three days. There should not be more than 4,000-5,000 people in one spot and there has to be a certain number parking for cars and two-wheelers."

He added, "But the organisers refused to accept them. Yesterday there was an attempt to meet Anna Hazare, but the police could not. Sections 107 and 151 CrPc were applied at J P Park and Anna Hazare was proceeding  to defy the police orders.

There have to be a reasonable set of conditions under which the protest should be taken. This is the capital of our country and nearly 1.75 cr people live here. Protests have to be undertaken keeping the law and order situation in mind."

"It was Delhi Police which laid down the conditions, not the government. Anna Hazare's decision to defy prohibitory orders led police to believe that he could commit a cognizable offence. Hazare will be produced before a magistrate, says Chidambaram.

Meanwhile, police commissioner B K Gupta, said, “If Anna Hazare does not sign a bond saying that he will not defy 144 CrPc then we will have to send him to judicial custody. He is currently being produced to the special executive magistrate.”

According to the police 1400-1500 people have been detained across the city. The entire police force was without lathis and there was no violence on the streets. Nobody was hurt and there were more women police constables around.

We rejected the permission of indefinite fasts. 144 CrPc has been applied on J P Park as it disturbed the law and order situation. Team Anna failed to accept our guidelines for protest. They failed to comply with our conditions so we had no choice but to arrest them.

All the 22 conditions that were put infront of Anna were usual and ordinary and everyone has to be abide by them.
