Bihar oppn joins the stay-in protest bandwagon

Oppn members spend the night at legislature protesting against corruption in development schemes in state

PTI | July 21, 2010

Around 80 Bihar opposition members spent the night in the well of the two houses of the state legislature demanding the resignation of Nitish Kumar in the light of a CAG report highlighting alleged financial irregularities in the state.chief minister

The opposition MLAs and MLCs said they would continue their dharna in both the Houses till their demand is met, apparently taking a cue from the Karnataka opposition members, who were on a five-day-long dharna in the state Assembly demanding CBI probe into the alleged illegal mining in the state.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed in both houses of Bihar legislature yesterday as opposition members overturned desks and chairs, broke microphones and virtually came to blows with ruling alliance MLAs over the debate on the CAG report.

"We will not lift the agitation till this corrupt government resigns", RJD deputy leader in the assembly Shakeel Ahmad Khan told PTI today.

He alleged that the agitating members in the two Houses were not provided food in the night and breakfast this morning.

"It reflects that the chief minister Nitish Kumar has lost his mental balance following his involvement in the scandal and is desperately trying to gag the opposition", Khan alleged.

He said that the agitation in both the Houses would continue till the demand was met.

Chairman T K Jha had yesterday suspended 14 opposition MLCs for the day following unruly scenes in the House after the opposition demanded resignation of the BJP-JD(U) government on the CAG report that highlighted alleged irregularities of Rs 11,412 crore in execution of development and welfare schemes between 2002-03 and 2007-08.

Opposition MLAs sat on a dharna in the Well demanding immediate resignation of the Nitish Kumar government.

RJD leader Ramchandra Purve had yesterday said the opposition MLAs would continue the dharna for an indefinite period to press for the demand.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar had termed the incident as "unwarranted, unfortunate" and an "attempt to seek publicity.
