Black 'n' white: How to search ICIJ data on offshore accounts

Download the full list of 1 lakh names, or search on database thrown open to the public by ICIJ

GN Bureau | June 17, 2013

Giving more teeth to the debate over black money in India, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a global network of 160 reporters from across 60 countries, including India, on Saturday released an interactive database that lists 1 lakh “secret companies, trusts and funds created in offshore locales". The list comprises more than 600 Indians.

According to ICIJ, these secret accounts are in tax havens such as the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and Cook Islands.

While the association said the database “opens up records that may help bring accountability to an industry that has long operated in the shadows”, it also clarifies that there are “legitimate reasons to use offshore companies and trusts”. The ICIJ, the association said on its website, “does not intend to suggest or imply that the people and companies included in the database have broken the law or otherwise acted improperly”.

You can download the whole list here or you can search here.

The ICIJ website clarifies that the offshore leaks database does not yet have a country filter. “We are working on that and hope to be able to add it to the database soon,” it says. For now, you can search by country, or cities, which ICIJ says would get more hits.

For the record, most of the companies/individuals listed in the database are based in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Gurgaon and Ahmedabad.
