Centres being launched to avert suicides and create awareness among public on value of human life

To avert suicides and create awareness among public on the value of human life, counselling centres would be launched in all police stations of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts tomorrow, West Zone IG, P Sivanandi said in Dharmapuri on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the District Police Office, he said the centers were being launched on the orders of the Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi. A department survey had revealed that 25 per cent of suicides were due to family disputes, 25 per cent due to financial problems, 25 per cent due to chronic diseases, 15 due to depression and about others due to failure in love.

Compared to these eight districts, suicides had increased in Tiruppur, Coimbatore and Erode districts.

The counseling centres would be led by an inspector, an advocate, social worker, representatives from NGOs and a physiatrist.

Sivanandi also said that the concerned Superintendents of Police would inspect the centers once in 15 days and the DIG and IG, every month.

The IG also expressed concern over the shortage of manpower in in Tirupur and Nilgiris districts and said this held true for all women police stations also.

Sivanandi lauded Dharmapuri district record in controlling illicit and spurious liquor and said this model would be implemented in all West Zone districts.
