Delegation asks Centre to let Kerala build new dam on Periyar

Submits memorandum highlighting a study by IIT Roorkee on Mullaperiyar

The Madhya Pradesh-based United Malayalee Association has urged the centre to allow Kerala to build a new dam on the river Periyar as the present one has outlived its life.

A memorandum addressed to prime minister Manmohan Singh was submitted to state governor Ram Naresh Yadav in this regard by a delegation led by the association's general secretary O D Joseph in Bhopal on Wednesday, a release said.

Highlighting a recent study of IIT Roorkee that suggested that the Mullaperiyar dam, which was constructed in 1887, would collapse if an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hits it.

The estimated life of the dam was 50 years. The ideal water level of the dam is 41.45 meter and the full tank level is 46.30 meter, it said.

The central water commission has suggested to keep the water level at 41.45 meters along with other measures to strengthen the dam.

The memorandum said the lives of millions of people was in danger with various statistics indicating apprehensions about the safety of the dam.
