DMK's pullout threat is well timed, calculated

DMK leader TR Baalu met the prime minister today morning and expressed his party's concern on the petrol price hike. He requested a roll-back as it has affected all sections of people including the salaried class and farmers. Baalu explained to the PM why DMK was protesting throughout Tamil Nadu against the petrol price hike and told Manmohan Singh that party supremo M Karunanithi was very upset about this move.

According to source, PM told him that the government was aware of the precarious situation and was working out ways to reduce the burden on consumers.

Meanwhile, Karunanidhi has threatened to pull out of the ruling coalition on this issue. Read the PTI report here.

A senior DMK MP said, off the record, that if he came out with details of recent scams, UPA2 would be in great trouble. He claimed that if he went on record, the government might collapse.

When you read this threat and the one from Karunanidhi together, they seem to be well timed and calculated.

Jagadambika Pal, a Congress MP from Uttar Prradesh, has assumed office as chairman of the committee on public undertakings. His very first move got kudos from the 20 members of the panel. Reason: Pal, who was UP chief minister for a day, fulfilled their demand of postponing the meeting of COPU from May 31 to June 5. Some 12 members of his committee were to participate in the Bharat Bandh against petrol hike. Pal told an opposition leader that it was a political issue, and each party had its right to protest. Hence, he quietly told the secretariat to shift the date to June 5. Many raised toast on mobile phone for Pal.

V Kishore Chandra Deo, union minister of tribal affairs, is also in the race to become the first citizen of India. A long time Charan Singh confidant, Deo was a minister in the Choudhary's cabinet. He missed out on the position of Lok Sabha speaker as he was considered too close to Dr YS Rajasekara Reddy. Now, to show loyalty to 10 Janpath, Deo is issuing daily statements against Jagan Reddy -- but only in Teugu newspapers, not in national dailies.
