Health services were partially affected across the state with about 2600 government doctors under the banner of Bihar State Health Services Association (BSHSA) launching boycott of hospital work for 24 hours from 6 am today against the killing of their colleague Bhuddhadev Singh at Gopalganj jail on Sunday night.

The strike is total with doctors turning up to the hospitals but boycotting the hospital work+, BSHSA General Secretary Ajay Kumar and Secretary Ranjit Kumar said.

In Gopalganj, the emergency and general wards wore a deserted look with doctors boycotting the work.

"We have launched the boycott of hospital work stir to protest against the killing of our colleague in Gopalganj", the leaders said.

They demanded that the state government provide a compensation of Rs one crore to the bereaved family of the deceased, besides all those including the jail officials allegedly involved in the killing be executed through speedy trial.

The state government should also immediately enact a law-- Medical Professionals Protection Act on the pattern of 12 other states, including Andhra Pradesh and ensure adequate security to the doctors on duty, they said.

Meanwhile, family members of the deceased demanded a CBI inquiry into the killing.

Expressing shock at the incident, deputy chief minister S K Modi said the state government would bring the Medical Professionals Protection Bill 2011 in the coming monsoon session of the state legislature.

The state government would also ensure speedy trial of the case, he said, adding the government would also try to ensure that such incident doesn't recur in future.

The doctor, Buddhadev Singh, brother of ex-MP Satyadeo Singh, was called inside Gopalganj jail by inmate Ranjan Yadav who was suffering from chicken pox on Sunday and upon entering the jail, a group of convicts had brutally assaulted him.

The injured doctor was first admitted to a government hospital here but was then rushed to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) after his condition deteriorated. He was declared brought dead at PMCH same evening.

An FIR has been registered against Ranjan Yadav and six other inmates, police said.

Taking serious note of the incident, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had ordered a high-level probe by state home secretary Amir Subhani. Subhani had later submitted a report to Chief Minister on circumstances leading to the death.
