"Don’t see any young leader with vision"

I honestly think that for all practical purposes history for young Indians is a subject mugged up in school. We have very little sense of history. What we do (know, realise and comprehend) began in 1992 with economic liberalisation. That is the only operative point our young populace can actually contextualise.

Among the leaders of yesteryears, we had some great thinkers and intellectuals –tall leaders who were committed to a long-term vision of India as a nation. But unfortunately, I see no one (of that stature today), and haven’t for close to thirty years now.

While India is set to emerge as one of the youngest nations by 2020 (with an average age of 29 years, according to Economic Survey, 2011-12), I feel the young have been brought up to think only of material and personal gains. It is our fault, and that of our mindset. I do not see anyone in the political arena with a vision for the nation except to be like the West. (

As told to Ankita Lahiri)
