Foreign addicts double strength in Goa

As many foreigners possessing drugs have been arrested in the first half of this year as were arrested last year.

The number of foreigners booked for possessing drugs in Goa have almost doubled in the current year, the statistics tabled in state legislative assembly said.

As per the figures tabled on the floor of the House during the ongoing state legislative Assembly, 22 foreigners were arrested till June in 2010 under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) act.

While 23 foreigners were arrested throughout the year 2009, the first six months of 2010 has recorded 22 foreigners being arrested for possessing drugs by various police stations and Anti Narcotic Police Station (ANPS).

In the year 2007 and 2008, 13 cases each of foreigners possessing narcotics were booked.

The NDPS act is a stringent legislation which prescribes jail sentence of ten years, if accused is convicted under it.

In the year 2010, six Nepalis, Five Israelis and four Nigerians top the list along with Iranian, Swedish, Norwegian, Netherlands, Russian and Palestinian citizens, who were found with the drugs in the police raids.
