Govt strikes deal with oppn on CWG issue

Sports minister's statement will be discussed in parl

GN Bureau | August 8, 2011

Immediately after the parliament was adjourned for the day on Monday, the government swung into action organising compromise talks with the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and struck a deal by the evening to put both houses back on the rail on Tuesday.

As a part of the deal, the controversial August 2 suo motto statement of sports minister Ajay Maken on the previous NDA government paving way for appointment of Suresh Kalmadi as Commonwealth Games organising committee chief will be discussed in the rajya sabha at noon after the question hour and in the lok sabha in the afternoon.

But for a calling-attention motion already admitted in the lok sabha, the government had no problem in the simultaneous discussion on the matter in both the houses.

The BJP, which tendered privilege notices against Maken in both the houses for his statement implicating NDA and absolving the PMO,  first insisted on discussing Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit's role in the CWG contracts, but later conceded when the government said it can raise the issue in the course but the CAG report can be discussed in parliament only after the public accounts committee (PAC) examines it.
