HRD ministry is "actively" considering bringing an ordinance to ensure timely award of degrees to students of IIIT D&M Kancheepuram whose career hangs in balance after a bill concerning the institute could not be passed in the rajya sabha during the monsoon session.

"We had brought an ordinance before also which was to be replaced by Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram Bill, 2011. But now we are left with little choice and actively considering to bring another ordinance," said an HRD ministry official.

He said an ordinance could also be brought to save the carer prospects of students of Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) in Pune and Kolkata as National Institutes of Technology amendment bill could not be passed in rajya sabha also.

A decision to this effect will be taken soon, the official added.

The non-passage of the Bill, which would have brought the two IISERs under it, has raised a question mark on students getting their degrees on time.

The IIIT D&M Kancheepuram Bill, 2011 could not be passed in the rajya sabha in the monsoon session after Congress MP J D Seelam demanded reservation for SC/ST and OBC students in the institute.
