Representatives of various political parties express fears for state's irrigation

Representatives of various political parties on Sunday urged Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to file an appeal before the Krishna River Water Disputes Tribunal in case of certain issues in the award that would affect the state's interests.

Representatives of various parties like the Congress, TDP, CPI, CPM, and Loksatta, who attended a meeting on the issue under the banner Krishna Delta Parirakshna Samithi, expressed fear that the tribunal award would effect the irrigation system in the state and thus effect cultivation of crops.

Following the award, water flow from Almatti reservoir in Karnataka into various reservoirs of Andhra Pradesh may be affected, the meeting felt.

"Insufficient water from Krishna river may affect cultivation in the districts like Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Khammam, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari, Kurnool, and Kadapa," the representatives said adding that irrigation projects under construction in the state may not get water in the future following the award by the tribunal.

The meeting also opposed the permission given by the tribunal to raise the height of Almatti dam and also the decision on the water-sharing of water.
