Kumar Mangalam Birla in CBI net in coalgate scam

The CBI registered a case of cheating and conspiracy against Aditya Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla whose group company Hindalco allegedly received undue benefits during allocation of coal blocks in 2005

GN Bureau | October 15, 2013

Aditya Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla is the latest in the list of high profile individuals to be named in the multi-crore coal blocks allocation scandal after the central bureau of investigation (CBI) registered a case against him on Tuesday. A case has also been registered against former coal secretary P C Parekh.

According to the FIR filed by the investigating agency, aluminum manufacturing company Hindalco, part of the Birla group of companies, was allegedly shown undue favour in the allocation of coal blocks in Odisha in 2005.

Currently, the CBI is conducting raids at Hindalco’s Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bhubaneswar offices and Birla, who has been slapped with charges of cheating and conspiracy, will soon be called for questioning.

Meanwhile, the Birla group has denied having received any FIR from the CBI. Company officials have also said that there is no reason for the company or their chief to be booked in the coal scam.

So far, the investigating agency has registered 14 FIRs on the basis of preliminary investigations conducted on the manner in which coal blocks were allocated between 2006 and 2009 when prime minister Manmohan Singh held direct charge of the coal ministry.
