MPSTDC bringing caravan-tourism back

Tourism authority will be running three vehicles with modern facilities

To revive caravan tourism in the state, the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) will run three vehicles equipped with modern facilities, including LCD, home theatre and chemical toilets shortly.

"We are going to get three caravans shortly and these vehicles will be run on Bhopal-Tava-Pachmarhi circuit at the initial stage," MPSTDC chief general manager Bal Mukund Namdeo said.

These places have water and sewerage disposal facilities for caravans, parking space and camping sites, Namdeo said adding each specially equipped caravan was costing them around Rs 22 lakh.

"We are planning to run caravans on Khajuraho-Orchha-Shivpuri and Indore-Ujjain-Mandu-Maheshwar and Omkareshwar circuits as well," he said.

MPSTDC has started reviving caravan tourism after this sector of late saw few foreign tourists with vehicles visiting the state, officials said.

"In 80s, foreign tourists, especially from Netherlands, used to bring caravans by ship to Madhya Pradesh.

The parking places used to remain packed and camping sites too saw huge crowd of tourist in Khajuraho," they said.
