No coercive action against Maoists: Naveen

Italian government expresses faith in negotiations by state to secure release of hostages

Odisha on Monday assured the Maoists that no coercive action will be taken against the red ultras in efforts to secure the release of Boscusco Paolo and Clandio Colangilo, Italian nationals taken hostage by the Maoists in kandhamal district.

"There will be no coercive action taken by the seccurity forces as long as the Odisha state Organising Committee of the CPI-Maoist do not indulge in any violence or unlawful activity. I once again most earnestly urge the Maoists to release the two Italian nationals," chief minister Naveen Patnaik said in a statement on Monday.

The Italian consul general Joel, Mechiori, who has been camping in Bhubaneswar since Sunday said that his government was deeply concerned about the safety of the two tourist but expressed satisafcton over the effots put in by Odisha.

"We are confident that the situation is moving and we always hope for the best for the Italian tourists," Melchiori told the press on Monday.

"We are following closely the situation with the local government... with the home secretary... they are extremely co-operative with us. They allow us to be informed, follow it step by step. So this is extremely important for us and allows us to be understand better the situation and follow it up and also inform the Italian families in Italy... well we hope for the best... we are concerned about the safety of the Italian tourists but we hope for the best," he said on being asked about the efforts to secure the two hostages' release.
