Om Puri faces breach of parliament privilege

Cutting across party lines in both the Houses of Parliament

GN Bureau | August 30, 2011

Bollywood's 61-year old veteran actor Om Puri faces privilege notices from a score of ruling and Opposition MPs cutting across party lines in both the Houses of Parliament for the "derogatory and defamatory" remarks casting aspersions on the MPs at Anna Hazare's rally at Ramlila Maidan here.

Though the Media claimed the privilege notice is also against Hazare's frontline associate Kiran Bedi, a former top cop, speaker Meira Kumar acknowledged the privilege motion only against Om Puri, saying "the matter is under my consideration."

Members agitated to send it immediately to the privilege committee, but she did not oblige. Similar scenes were witnessed on the issue in the Rajya Sabha.

Om Puri was prompt to apologise calling the MPs "naalayak" (incompetent) and "ganwar" (illiterate) and said he would appear before the MPs if summoned
Facing privilege motion in Parliament, actor Om Puri on Tuesday apologised for making derogatory remarks against politicians and said he is ready to appear before MPs if summoned.

"I was very emotional and I regret using those words, which may have hurt some sentiments.. I feel I spoke like a man on the street," he said, adding that his outburst came in the heat of the moment on seeing Hazare's condition. Another Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, a staunch Anna supporters, however, twittered: "I stand by Om Puri who merely echoed publicly what is openly said a million times in millions of homes everyday.

The practice is that the Lok Sabha speaker and the Rajya Sabha chairman first write to the accused to seek his or her explanation and then proceed to refer the matter to the privilege committees of the two Houses. The matter is, however, dropped if the accused tenders an unqualified apology.
