PM to inaugurate NTPC project

The project will help the western region become self-sufficient in terms of power

Prime minister Manmohan Singh is all set to inaugurate NTPC’s proposed Rs 30,000 crore Lara power plant in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh which will help the region become self-sufficient in terms of power on Thursday. During this visit, the PM is also expected to dedicate NTPC’s Sipat power plant to the nation.

According to a news report in The Financial Express, the project’s coal requirement will be met from the Talaipalli captive block and water will be drawn from the Saradih barrage on the Mahanadi river. Upon commissioning, the project will help the western region become self-sufficient in terms of power.

Chhattisgarh is expected to be a major beneficiary of the Lara project, which will have a total capacity of 4,000 MW which will be commissioned in two phases. NTPC is expected to spend about Rs 12,000 crore in the first stage. The company is also in the process of developing power projects at places such as Barethi, Khargone and Gadarwara in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
