SC pulls up CBI on slow progress in coal scam

Directs it to file FIR if the centre fails to trace the missing files

GN Bureau | August 29, 2013

The supreme court on Thursday pulled up CBI over slow progress in the coal block allocation scam giving the agency five days to submit a statement on missing coal files.

The centre on its part assured the court that it will give all the relevant files in two weeks. Censuring the government over the delay in submitting the files on cola block allocation the court said, “You can't sit over documents which must be provided to CBI."

The court also directed the CBI to expedite the probe. “You have to pick up speed for concluding the probe against all 169 companies allegedly involved in the scam,” the court said.

The CBI in its defence said it had not received many crucial files from the government which resulted in the delay of the probe, and has assured the court that the probe will be completed in four-five months.

The court also asked why FIR was not registered if the crucial files went missing. It directed the CBI to file FIR and conduct investigation if the government failed to trace the missing files.
