Schedule for laptop distribution tabled in TN assembly

The government has already allotted Rs 912 crore in this year's budget

The Tamil Nadu government today charted out the schedule for distribution of laptops to school and college students.

A policy note from the minister for Special Programme Implementation tabled in the assembly said in 2011-12, Class 12 students, first and third year arts and science college students,second and fourth year engineering students and first and third year polytechnic college students would get laptops.

For 2012-13, laptops would be distributed to Class 12 students, third year of arts and science college students, second and fourth year engineering students and first and third year polytechnic college students.

The following year (2013-14), Class 12 students and first year students of polytechnic college students would receive their laptops, the note said.

During 2011-12, over 9.12 lakh students,including 5.47 lakh school students, 2.91 lakh arts and science college students, 0.24 lakh engineering college students and 0.50 lakh polytechnic college students will receive free laptops from the government.

For this, the government has already allotted Rs 912 crore in this year's budget.

Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) has been tasked with procuring laptops under this scheme. Distribution of these laptops will begin from September 15 this year.
