Many within BJP pinning hopes on Swaraj pacifying him

GN Bureau | June 10, 2013

A day after Narendra Modi was crowned the chief engineer of BJP’s election campaign for 2014, BJP veteran, L K Advani, resigned from the three posts he had held in the party. Although the party refuses to accept the resignation, reactions are flooding in from all corners. Here are a few:

"I am surprised he never shared it with us. But I'm sure we will convince him." — Sushma Swaraj, BJP

"It is tough for us to remain part of the NDA now that the BJP's tallest leader is gone." — KC Tyagi, JD(U)

"Rajnath ji and other senior leaders have requested Advani ji to withdraw his resignation." — Shrikant Sharma, BJP

“Poor Advani. It must have been hard to write that resignation letter...or any letter....given your appointment letter was a stone tablet.” — Vir Das, stand-up comic and actor

“#Advani resignation sad, but an individual is not above the party.” — Senior Bengal BJP leader Tathagata Roy

“L K Advani's resignation is shocking. JD (U) will meet to consider the latest development.” — Sharad Yadav, JD(U)

“Why not @narendramodi for PM? Advani has gone senile.” — Ousted BJP leader Ram Jethmalani on Twitter

“Advani's resignation is one of the many repurcussions of Narendra Modi's elevation.” — Congress

“#Advani's resignation is unfortunate and a setback, but #RSS will not mediate in the matter: RSS ideologue MG Vaidya” — from Twitter

“I’m not surprised. BJP is politically bankrupt, they have sidelined people responsible for building the party.” — Renuka Chowdhury, Congress leader

“I am not sure why Advaniji has given his resignation. All I know is party has to take a call. The reason could be personal as well.” — Kirti Azad, BJP leader

“The party with a difference is indeed a party with differences as is evident from Advani’s resignation. The fate of NDA is sealed as BJP suffers NaMonia. The UPA will bounce back to power in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.” — Mahesh Tapase, Maharashtra NCP spokesperson

“Party will break if resignation accepted.” — Murli Manohar Joshi, BJP leader

"I don't think Advani is a big asset to the BJP. Only Modi is qualified to lead BJP, not Advani, Sushma or Yashwant Sinha." — Ram Jethmalani

“The party is because of Advaniji. My only desire is that Sushma Swaraj is able to convince him to withdraw his resignation.” — Uma Bharti, BJP

“I had said in the morning that the BJP will be divided and that is what is happening.” — Naresh Aggarwal, Samajwadi Party

“It’s clear now that personal ambitions are dominating the functioning of the BJP.” — Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress
