Supreme Court restores AIADMK MLA’s membership
Ruling sets precedent for legislative seat reservation for Dalit minorities

The Supreme Court has restored AIADMK leader Chandra’s membership of the Tamil Nadu legislature.
The election of Chandra from the reserved seat of Rajapalayam was set aside by the Madras High Court. The reason was that she was a Christian and was not eligible to contest a seat reserved for SC.
The high court order came on a petition from a losing candidate who argued that Chandra was not a practising Hindu and hence not entitled to contest from a seat reserved for SC.
This was challenged in the Supreme Court by the MLA. She argued that she was practising Hinduism and can contest from reserved seat.
The apex court on Monday quashed the high court order.
