Tollywood hit by Telangana stir

Celebrity children, Ram Charan Teja and Jr NTR releases face Telangana heat

GN Bureau | August 23, 2013

The bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh is casting its shadow on Tollywood in many ways. The most recent victims are the two star sons of two prominent Seemandhra icons. The much-awaited releases of Ram Charan Teja and N. T. Rama Rao Jr.  (Jr NTR) in the next few weeks face delay in the form of Telangana forces, who threaten to stop their screening.

A Student joint action committee (JAC) of the Osmani University (OU) today issued the threat citing the role of Union minister Chiranjeevi and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Harikrishna in the ongoing Seemandhra stir. Chiranjeevi, a pronounced crusader of a unified Andhra Pradesh, has been lobbying hard with the Congress party high command to reverse its Telangana decision.

On the other hand, Harikrishna, a TDP Rajya Sabha Member, tendered his resignation to highlight his supportfor the Samaikhyandhra cause. His resignation was accepted today.

In a quick retort, the OU student in the  JAC announced that the films featuring the two leader’s celebrity children would be targeted.. They also demanded that Jr NTR should make his Telangana stand public now that his father has revealed his Ssmaikhyandhra colours.

Ram Charan Teja has two releases, namely Yevadu and Toofan, the Telugu version of Zanjeer, in the next few weeks. The films have already been postponed a few times for a variety of reasons, one of them was the ongoing unrest over the state’s bifurcation.

Similarly, Jr NTR’s Ramayya Vastavayya is also due for release soon. Ironically, the producer of both the films is Dil Raju, a Telanganite, who is going to be hit badly if the films are not allowed smooth screening. He is already incurring heavy losses because of the frequent postponements.
