Is Bill Gates right in prescribing GM for Indian agriculture?

GN Bureau | May 17, 2010

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who famously visited Uttar Pradesh and Bihar last week, has said innovation is very crucial for Indian agriculture. In particular, the businessman-turned-philanthropist has transgenic foods in mind.

On one hand, we need something akin to the Green Revolution to deliver a multiplier effect so that food reaches the poorest of the poor. Also, it would take care of the growing population. Technology could be the only answer for that. On the other hand, we had a long debate on the introduction of the Bt Brinjal, where arguments against transgenic food won the day. We have allowed technology in a cash crop (cotton) but are not prepared to have genetically modified stuff on our plates.

There are many who argue that the decision on Br Brinjal needs to be reviewed and Gates through his media interview has joined the debate.

Do you think GM is the way for Indian agriculture?
