Most places in North India unsafe for women: report

Women less secure in the rich northern Indian states

GN Bureau | June 29, 2010

North Indian states - Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi figured among the worst scorers on the Female Security Index (FSI), says a report. This, despite Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi being top-rankers in the ‘Well Being Index’ (WBI) category in the same report.

The report also mentioned “some of the states having districts ranking ‘Bad’ or ‘Worst’ on WBI (e.g. Orissa, Eastern UP, WB, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar) are better placed on the FSI.”

On the FSI, there is huge disparity in some states as per the report. “Some large states exhibit huge disparities among districts for e.g. in Rajasthan, Dungarpur is classified as ‘Best’; Bhilwara is ‘Good’ while Alwar and Kota are among the ‘Worst’.”

Eastern and Central India figured among worse than the rest of India in the report on WBI category. “For instance, huge variation across districts in Karnataka is noticeable: while Bangalore is amongst the ‘Best’, Bellary and Gulbarga are ‘Bad’ and Bijapur, Koppal and Gadag are amongst the ‘Worst’.”

The study looked into 600 cities of India and was prepared by the Tata Strategic Management Group.

The WBI index was calculated by looking into - Home amenities, Kitchen Facilities, Education, Hygiene, Entertainment, Communication, Transportation and Healthcare and FSI used gender Ratio and data on Crime against women to collect the data.
