Nilekani visits Tumkur to oversee UID pilot project

Chelur, Bukkapatna, Kibbanahalli, Bellavi and Dodderi villages test beds for UID pilot

Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, today visited two villages in the district to review the progress in allotment of unique identification numbers.

Accompanied by a five-member team and Deputy Commissioner C Somashekar, he visited Chelur and Bellavi villages, official sources said.

In the first round, 2,263 persons were screened in Chelur, 2,279 in Bukkapatna, 2,539 in Kibbanahalli, 1,984 in Bellavi and 2,051 in Dodderi.

In the second round, 1,313 persons were screened at Chelur, 1,517 in Bukkapatna and 1,536 in Bellavi, the sources said.

Karnataka has been selected by UIDAI as the pilot state in the country for implementing the Centre's ambitious project to provide unique national ID numbers to all citizens above the age of 18 years.

Karnataka will be first state where multi-purpose ID numbers will be rolled out. The state's e-governance department has been roped in to implement the project.
