NHRC holds online training for cops on human rights

PTI | February 2, 2011

The first ever online training programme on human rights for police personnel was held here today in a bid to sensitise officers on the crucial issue.

NHRC Chairperson Justice K G Balakrishnan launched the programme, developed in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

It is the duty of NHRC to sensitise officers and people about human rights, he said at the event.

"This kind of focused training module becomes all the more important given the fact that various provisions of law and amendments therein sometimes take long to reach the police officers, down the hierarchy, whose responsibility is to maintain the law and order," the NHRC chief said.

The programme was attended by police personnel from three police academies in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The officers present in the academies had an online interaction with Balakrishnan and other senior NHRC officials on human rights-related issues.
