Serbian press association awards WikiLeaks founder

Assange recognized for contribution to right to information

The Association of Serbian journalists said on Monday its annual award would go to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, for his "historic contribution to the right to information for all citizens."

"The states have the right to protect their secrets, but Assange and WikiLeaks have proven why journalists must not help them to hide them," the statement published on the association's website said.

WikiLeaks and Assange "have made a historic contribution to every citizen's right on information," it added.

WikiLeaks has published thousands of cables in which US diplomats give their often candid views on world leaders, to Washington's acute embarrassment.

It has also leaked thousands of secret documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The founder of the whistleblowing website was arrested in London at Sweden's request in December and is appealing a British judge's decision to extradite him to Sweden over allegations of sexual assault. The hearing at the High Court in London will take place on July 12-13.

The Australian former computer hacker has claimed his greatest fear is eventual extradition to the United States.
