BHEL commissions 500 MW thermal unit in West Bengal

BHEL so far has contributed 83 percent of the total coal-based generating capacity of West Bengal Power Development Corporation

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a Maharatna enterprise, has recently commissioned a 500 MW thermal unit in West Bengal.

The unit was the second 500 MW set to be commissioned at Sagardighi Thermal Power Station (TPS) phase II project in Murshidabad district. The first unit of the 1,000 MW project was already commissioned by BHEL in December 2015. The project has been set up by the state-owned West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL), a BHEL press release said.

BHEL’s scope of work in the contract envisaged design, engineering, manufacture, supply and erection and commissioning of steam generators, steam turbine generators and auxiliaries, electrical equipment, switchyard and state-of-the-art controls & instrumentation (C&I), along with associated civil works.

The equipment for the project was manufactured at BHEL’s Trichy, Ranipet, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Bhopal based plants, while the company’s Power Sector - Eastern Region undertook erection and commissioning of the equipment.

BHEL has so far contributed 83 percent of the total coal-based generating capacity of WBPDCL. At present, BHEL is also executing three units of 40 MW each of Rammam hydroelectric project of NTPC Limited, in West Bengal.

BHEL has already established its engineering prowess in the past through successfully delivering higher rated units of 600 MW, 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW thermal sets with a high degree of indigenisation.

BHEL’s strength of an installed base of over 1,70,000 MW of power plant equipment coupled with its vast experience with Indian coal and conditions makes it an ideal choice of utilities in the country, and BHEL’s customers enjoy the advantage of assured and prompt after-sales services.
