L K Advani, the 83-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party patriarch, is hitting the road for 38 days from next Tuesday from Sitab Diara in Patna, with a rigorous daily schedule of travelling or lecturing from 10 am to 10 pm to propagate nothing except "clean politics" and "good governance" across 100 districts in 23 states and union territories.
The UPA government may sit pretty as his chief charioteer or yatra convener Ananth Kumar, a BJP general secretary, on Wednesday made it clear that this seventh journey of Advani is not to propagate any negatives, nor for "bhandafod" (exposure of corruption), nor for expansion of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, and not either for polls.
Advani is embarking upon this "Jan Chetna Yatra" to propagate his life's "positive" ideal of "clean politics" that alone can usher in "good governance," putting behind corruption and all present day maladies of the government and not to create any negative vibes, Ananth Kumar told a press conference while releasing details of his travel plans, including places where he will address public meetings or press conferences and where he will halt.
It is actually a 41-day long journey, but with two breaks when Advani will be back in Delhi on October 25 and 26 for Diwali and again on November 8 for his birthday when he turns 84. He will fly to Delhi on November 7 from Ahmedabad for the birthday. His 7600-km long Yatra that may be the last in his life ends in Delhi on November 20, a Sunday, with a massive rally the BJP is planning. The last such journey he undertook in 2006 was for national security (Bharat Suraksha).
Though primarily travelling by a modified Isuzu bus, fitted with a power-driven lift platform to enable to speak to people at roadsides from atop without alighting, Advani will be hopping on chartered aircraft and helicopters to cover distances, like using a helicopter to fly from Bhopal to Chhindwara on October 16 or from Guwahati to Kolkata on October 20 and from Jammu to Chandigarh on November 16 by special aircraft.
Bangalore, Mangalore, Udupi, Bhatkal and Karvar are on his route in Karnataka on October 31 and November 1 but not Bellary, nor has he included Somnath or Ayodhya that were the starting and end points in his first journey in 1990 that plummeted the BJP into power in Delhi.
Ananth Kumar had ready explanation: "We have already won in Ayodhya and the victory in the Supreme Court is also assured. So the Goal with which Somnath and Ayodhya were chosen is already achieved." This was supposed to be an anti-corruption Yatra but there is no word on corruption in the programme. It will automatically vanish, once there is clean politics and good governance, Ananth Kumar affirmed.
He also skirted a tricky question on whether Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi or former Karnataka chief minister B S Y Yeddyurappa ousted from power because of corruption will join Advani's Yatra at any stage. All important party leaders will be joining the Yatra when it passes through their states and all chief ministers, including those of the allies, will welcome the Yatra when it enters their states, he said.
Asked why Advani is giving a go-bye to the hinterland of Uttar Pradesh that goes to polls in a few months, Ananth Kumar said first, the Yatra is not for elections, and second, two other seniors -- former BJP President Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Mishra -- are also embarking on separate Yatras that will criss-cross the entire state.
Advani is touching eastern and western Uttar Pradesh in his journey, holding a rally at Varanasi on October 12 after travelling through Chandauli district and addressing a public meeting at Ghaziabad, with a night halt just before returning to Delhi, on November 19.
As regards BJP President Nitin Gadkari's plans to join the Yatra, Ananth Kumar said he would be with Advani during his travel in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand and of course attend the concluding mass rally in Delhi on November 20.
