After UP, Jairam turns the lens on Maharashtra

Asks Chavan to transfer MNREGS implementation authority to department of rural development and panchayati raj

GN Bureau | October 28, 2011

Within days of having turned the heat on Uttar Pradesh over its MNREGS scams, union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh has now written to Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, advising him to tansfer the authority for implementation of projects under the UPA's flagship welfare scheme to the state's rural development and panchayati raj (RD and PR) department. The department of water conservation and EGS is the implementing authority at present.

The union minister has highlighted the "pivotal role" of the panchayats in planning and executing MNREGS projects in his letter (attached below). With panchayats under the RD and PR department, implementatioon by the water conservation department is causing administrative conflicts.

The minister noted that Maharashtra could better its record in the implementation of the scheme if the transfer is carried oout at the earliest.
