Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party president Uma Bharti has further intensified attack on Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, this time firing from Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s shoulders.

According to Bharti, the Nehru-Gandhi family scion is simply baking political bread for his party and is not serious about the corruption charges against the Bahujan Samaj Part government in UP. Speaking at a public meeting in Lucknow, Bharti doubted if Gandhi really wanted a CBI probe into NRHM and MNREGA scams. The central government has enough evidence to topple the state government, she added.

The upcoming Uttar Pradesh election is a fight to finish for Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi who has not missed any opportunity to lampoon UP chief minister and BSP president Mayawati.

Gandhi is leading the UP assembly election campaign and has taken up the responsibility to monitor every aspect of the campaign personally. The Congress general secretary, who has been extensively travelling through the heartland, has been targeting CM Mayawati and her government in almost every public meeting.

On various occasions, he has alleged that the state government is responsible for major irregularities in the central government flagship schemes in Uttar Pradesh. Various Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have demanded CBI probes into all such scams.

Political pundits believe that anti-incumbency factor, which is very strong in the state, can polarise voters in the upcoming assembly elections, which are likely to be held in April next year. According to analysts, this strong anti-incumbency factor is Gandhi’s only hope in the election. The Congress party has been trying hard to project Gandhi as the state’s best bet to lead an anti-BSP government. Gandhi’s continuous barbs at the BSP leader and her government are deliberate as the Congress party believes this will help it revive its sagging fortunes in the state. And going by analysts, Gandhi has been quite successful at it too!
