The Delhi government is planning to set up e-waste collection centres.

Dharmendra, secretary, environment and forests, Delhi government, said, “The e-waste generated in the city is thrown with the other waste. But now we will have e-waste collection centres in collaboration with municipal bodies."

He said that this initiative will begin sometime in March and will be restricted only to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas for now. “We have identified around 17 places which will be collection centres. Many schools will also be collection centres,” he added. He said that the e-waste deposited at these collection centres will be then taken by government authorised e-waste recyclers to recycle it.

The Delhi government is also in the process of having energy efficiency retrofit in 100 government buildings in Delhi. “We have signed a memorandum of understanding with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to assist in doing this retrofit,” said Dharmendra. He said that a pre-qualification notice was issued on February 22, 2010 for these buildings.
