DU community radio addresses admission queries

To help answer queries of anxious students and parents regarding the new admission process this year, Delhi University (DU) has launched a new programme on its community radio.

‘Mission New Admission’  will be aired on DU's FM channel 90.4 MHZ. The Delhi University Community Radio (DUCR) station set up at the School of Open Learning (SOL) in the north campus covering areas in and around the university will produce the show.

The weekly show will feature principals of DU colleges directly responding to queries regarding the new admission process.

Candidates considering admission, parents, guardians can call in and direct their queries to the pricnipal on the various courses, facilties and faculties at her/his college. The queries may pertain to anything - expected cut off scores, publication of cut off lists, provisions for SC/ST students etc.

The principals of Hansraj college, Acharya Narendra Dev college and Janki Devi Memorial college have appeared on the show already.

The varsisty's community radio, thus far, has served as an important tool to generate awareness amongst students about different issues pertaining to them.

Special shows on 'safety issues for women in the campus' and precautions to avoid it have been aired on it. There was also a show that extensively dealt with ragging.

The FM channel also broadcasts programmes for the slums around the university campus.

The content is based on educational issues, social issues, daily concerns of students, with a show called, ‘SOL calling’ which answers questions of students related to the school of open learning.

The DU 90.4 FM combines education with information and entertainment to students. There are shows called, ‘Ubharte Sitarein’ which gives a platform to new and young talent in fields of dance, poetry, elocution, debate and writing.

‘Nayi dishayein’ is a show for students with disability, ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ is a slot which plays old hindi songs late in the evening.

Launched in October 2007, Vijaylakshmi Sinha, former deputy director-general of All India Radio is the programme manager at DUCR. She says, “DUCR is for the students, by the students and from the students. I try my best to reach out to students and provide counseling through this medium and look into their grievances.”
