The Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan (YJA) has requested the government to declare a stretch of the river Yamuna, from Panchnada till Allahabad, as a 'River Dolphin Community Reserve'.

In a letter to Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh, the YJA has written: "In the context of your very well thought out decision to notify Gangetic Dolphin as the national aquatic animal, we wish to share with you the fact that the river's stretch from Panchnada till Allahabad provides an excellent opportunity to secure it with people's participation as a River Gangetic Community Reserve."

The River Dolphin was declared as the national aquatic animal on January 19, 2010. YJA convenor Manoj Misra said, “The river as an entity has no legal protection. The establishment of a community reserve will help in indirectly protecting at least one stretch of the river.”

Misra added that under the Wildlife Protection Act, there is a provision for community reserves. Misra also said that the community has little role in national parks but a community reserve will help the local community of the area too.
