GoM all for having a MNC clear up the mess another created in Bhopal

Recommends floating global tenders to invite companies to undertake three-year long clean up

GN Bureau | June 21, 2010

The GoM on Bhopal has recommended that a global tender be floated inviting waste management companies to come and clear up the mess that Union Carbide left behind 26 years ago and which Dow refuses to touch today.

The entire cleaning up of the accident site will be done under the supervision of the National Environmental Engineering Institute (NEERI)

Estimated costs of decontaminating the site figure at Rs 300 crores for the three years it would take to clean the area. A coordination committee will also be set up for the purpose.

Further, the GoM has proposed that the Madhya Pradesh government will be contributing over Rs 470 crores as a part of the Rs 982 cr package announced by the Planning Commission towards compensating the victims including the dead and those who have been partially or permanently disabled.

While the city and the victims waited 26 years for justice, the government has decided that there will be no delay in having a reminder of the tragedy constructed to keep the incident alive in public memory.

So, tenders will be floated within three months for a Rs 100 crore memorial of the 1984 industrial mishap that took over 15,000 lives.
