Inflated travel bills: Kiran Bedi denies charges

Says never used public money for personal use

GN Bureau | October 20, 2011

Kiran Bedi, member of Team Anna and India's first woman IPS officer has refuted charges of producing inflated travel bills to the NGOs and institutions which have invited her to participate in their events and meetings on various occasions.

“These are all baseless charges. I have never used any such amount for my personal use,” clarified Bedi.

According to a news report in Thursday’s edition of The Indian Express, despite availing rebate on Air India tickets, on at least 12 occasions, Bedi charged full fare from the host institutes.

The report says that the last time Bedi showed inflated invoice was produced on September 29.

“Reimbursement cheques for these fares were credited to India Vision Foundation, the NGO headed by Bedi. Her chartered accountant Suresh Vyas said that what was being seen as a mismatch was actually a saving done by them- with Bedi spending less than what she was reimbursed for. Vyas said the money came in handy for travels for causes for which Bedi got no remuneration,” said the report.
